All I ever wanted was a boyfriend; one who’d call me up at twelve just to tell me he loved me, one who’d embrace me with a bouquet of white rose, one who’d give me that perfect new year’s kiss. All I ever wanted was an iPhone to show off to my friends, to take the best selfies. All I ever wanted was a hundred likes on my new Facebook profile picture and comments telling me how beautiful I looked. All I ever wanted were nice eyebrows so I could say “Eyebrows on fleek!” on my Instagram caption. All I ever wanted was a million followers on Twitter and a thousand retweets for every tweet. All I ever wanted was a thigh gap and a fine ass. All I ever wanted was a tonne of messages pouring in on WhatsApp to keep me occupied. All I ever wanted was the best of Jimmy Choo shoes and the nicest of Forever 21 dresses,

BUT

all she ever wanted was a mother. A mother to tell her she was loved, a mother to call her the most beautiful girl in the world. All she ever wanted was a father. A father to call her “Daddy’s little princess”, a father to give her piggy back rides. All she ever wanted was a hug from her mother when she was feeling blue. All she ever wanted was a kiss on her forehead by her father on her 16th birthday. All she ever wanted and longed for were her parents; parents she lost at the age of two.

All she ever wanted was family, not a boyfriend, not the perfect new year’s kiss, not red roses, not a 100 likes on Facebook, not an iPhone, not a million followers on Twitter, not the coolest profile, not the perfect body. All she ever wanted were her parents. All she ever wanted was all she could never have.
